A link to the art section of my blog

There is no way you could describe this section as a ‘gallery’, it’s just not what I wanted or saw when I began to plan the blog, and lord I’ve built enough of them online over the years, no this was always going to be different. Here yes you will see the finished artwork, but I wanted all the support work to be shown as well, the sketches, the paths that didn’t work as well as I’d hoped, the techniques I used and learned along the way. And most of all the ‘why’ – the rational for the work, what it means to me, and what I hope you see when you cast your eyes over it for the first time – click here to visit ‘The Art’

Me and my camera in Kenya, 2009

British sniper team in Afghanistan, 2009/10 - an original artwork by Brent Meheux

Hunter, or Hunted

This is the first piece I’ve produced since I got back from Afghanistan that relates to that tour, I’m not sure where I’ll go from here to be honest. I’d like to think that it’ll be the start of a series of paintings from the tour, but still not sure. The subject is a British army sniper team in Afghanistan, taken from reference photos of the lads on the ground. I’ve deliberately chosen angles that hide their features, they know who they are, and so will all the lads from the tour, but I didn’t want others to. The title relates to the fact that as with any war fought between conventional forces and insurgents you really never know where the threat will come from, is the local national enjoying tea in the shade harmless, or is he ‘dicking’?

Scarfs, a must have men’s accessory that’s not just for winter

Men's scarfs, bright, colourful and indervidual

Getting a real thing about scarfs lately, and I’m not the only one as they seem to have become the number one accessory this last 12 months or so, and I for one have jumped on the bandwagon, but as usual I’ll be buggered if I’m going to spend a fortune on them – click here to read my article on men’s scarfs

I’ll be dammed if I’m going to pay that for a fancy camera strap, I know I’ll make one

A Braided camera strap, Fujifilm X100 camera strap

A braided camera strap that I made for my Fujifilm X100

On Steve Huff’s website I’d seen a really nice camera strap he’d used on his Leica, and after a hunt around on the web I found the make, ‘ARTISAN & ARTIST’, mind you for nice price as well, over £85. Bugger that I thought, well that was until I spotted a women’s belt in ‘H&M’ for only £3.99, I know I’ll make one – click here to see how I indeed did make one for my Fujifilm X100

So what is ‘a moment in time’ anyway?

A moment in time, the latest sketches by Brent Meheux

A moment in time
, the latest sketches by Brent Meheux

Here is a recent sketch exploring the proportions and notion of a split second in time, yes I know it’s not quite there yet, but I’m getting closer with each sketch. The whole idea is to truly show the illusion of speed in a cut-away sculpture, a car or a boat, in order to show this I’ve been playing with the idea of the momentum of the man made object also tearing away at the land, or sea, as well. Well that’s the idea, click here to read and see more.

When does modeling become sculpture?

Sopworth Camel, a WW1 british fighter, scratch built by Brent Meheux in Afghanistan

It’s a fair question, yet almost impossible to answer. For years now I’ve been building more and more complicated models, a sort of winter hobby really. We’re not talking about ‘kit’s, no all the models are built from scratch, in depth research leads to hand drawn plans, which lead to ever more complicated cut away models. Now the last few years I’ve been selling the finished article, not for stupid amounts, but never the less I’ve never had any trouble finding buyers. But is it art, you see I want to know when, if ever, a model will become a sculpture, work that out and I may yet make a living from my art – click here to read the article

Getting on my bike, an old fool rushes in

Classic Bikes in the 'Tweed Run' in London

Coming back from Afghanistan I’d developed a bad case of Achilles tendonitis, and after being told by the quack that the only way it was going to get better was by resting it for at least six months I decided to buy a bike, by way of keeping my fitness up. 1x £500 racing bike later I realize it’d been a real case of ‘fools rush in’, all the more so now that I’ve found all these great retro bikes out there, biking has all of a sudden become very cool – click here to read my article on a new wave of cool bikes.

Facebook, and an odd thought or two on this social media stuff

Facebook login page

We all seem to have a love/hate relationship with Facebook, I for one can’t say I love it, but I do love the way in which it helps me to keep in touch with old friends. My students are addicted to it, my best friend is convinced he needs two accounts, and the press tells us it’s the largest floatation worldwide, where have I heard that before, and anyone remember ‘friendsreunited’? For more on this and other equally odd thoughts click here

Neither age nor friends or the media should dictate your style, only you can

Classic style, brogues, antique briefcase and 1957 Omega Seamaster watch, some of my most treasuered things!

This teaching fashion students is starting to rub off on me, I’m stating to re-think my wardrobe, looking at the latest fashion blogs, and…and end up back where I always end up, content with my own style, a mix of affordable new, quality old, and all with a classically English undercurrent, well sort of – click here to read the whole article.

Black and white, the foundation of all good design

Typography, an example of great black and white graphic design
A great example of black and white graphic design just using type

The foundation of great design to me lies in understanding certain rules, one of the key ones is that everything must work in mono, if you are just using colour to make your work striking then you have missed the bus. Stage one of any design process in graphic design, or for that matter art in general is the black and white design; this is where to explore composition and contrast, balance and symmetry. It is only after you have ‘nailed’ the design at this stage that you even begin to think of adding colour, and this is a whole new stage – click here to read my article on black and white being the foundation of all good design

Steve Huff, camera reviews you can understand, use, and trust

Steve Huff, camera reviews you can understand, use, and trust

There are hundreds of very well respected websites out there reviewing just about every new camera model brought out, my problem is that the vast majority are written by geeks for geeks. Frankly I can’t understand a word that is on them, and more to the point I in no way find them helpful when it comes to choosing a new camera, and that is where Steve Huff comes in. Here we have reviews about how the camera is to ‘use’, how it makes you feel; written in plain English. Click here to read my full review of Steve’s blog

A Rodeo in Canada, in 2010, taken with my Olympus OM2sp

As with a great many artists I have a love affair with photography, for me it has always been a stand alone art, the camera is not just there for taking reference pictures, it in its self can produce things of beauty. I have always been lucky I feel in the fact that I’m of a generation that has straddled the film and digital age. I mastered my trade in the darkroom long before I learned ‘Photoshop’, I learned to read a light meter and focus a picture long before I bought my first cameras with auto focus and intelligent programs - click here to find out how that love of photography got off the ground

Olympus OM2sp, a users review

Olympus OM2sp - a fantastic 35mm film camera

Over the years I’ve owned most of the OM range of cameras by Olympus, from the OM1 to the OM4, with the exception of the OM3. After a ten-year break I decided to get back into film Photography and so started a hunt for a new OM, not just any though, no I was hooked on the OM2sp, and here is why – click here to read my review of using the OM2sp

Monty, my 1957 MGA

Monty, my 1957 MGA

When I was 17 like all boys I couldn’t wait to get my first car, in those days the most popular cars were old Mk1 Ford Escorts, or Minis, real ones mind you not that German crap, but not me, I had my eyes on something quite different. Years previously my mother had owned a MG Midget for a while, and I was smitten. Well with a little searching and a small amount of luck for £200 I was soon the proud owner of a 10-year-old wreck with about 50 previous owners, no heating, gaffer tape and string holding the roof together, and I loved it. Over the next few years I had 3 more, all Mg’s, loved them all, that is until I saw my first MGA. I’d driven out to the ‘Bear and Ragged Staff’, out past Romsey, as I pulled into the car park there sat a light blue MGA, straight away I was convinced that it was the prettiest car I’d ever seen, little did I know that many years later I buy one - click here to read the full article

Glamping, short for ‘Glamorous Camping’, two words I’m sure the Oxford dictionary never had any intentions of seeing in the same sentence, let alone side by side.

Relax & Revive - a picture of me glamping in Looe, Cornwall

I for one have become really rather addicted to it, and so, more to the point, has my wife. Ok I know roughy-toughy soldiers do not normally do anything that could in anyway be seen as camp, and glamorous camping has got to be camp right? You couldn’t be more wrong, to me Glamping is more akin to a 1920’s safari than ‘Carry on camping’, and quite possibly the cheapest way possible to recharge the batteries in both style and luxury. Glamping has been around for quite sometime now and there have been thousands of words written on the subject, loads of books, magazine articles, and websites, and so I don’t propose to repeat what others have said, rather I’d like to give my slant on it, why I became addicted, and where I see us going next with it - click here to read the full article

Hair by Barbara Meheux

Barbara, the wife, has decided to get all arty on me lately, must be rubbing off from me! She’s been a hairdresser for years now and has her own salon in a small village in Devon, Country Styles in Newtown Poppleford, usual thing really same old thing every week, until now that is. All of a sudden she’s decided to go a little mad, and I thought I’d share it with the world, click here to see her latest work….

The Cava Queen

Stimulation comes in all guises, a thought provoking website, an unsuspected conversation, and sometimes a bloody good book, a category the Cava Queen falls beautifully in to. After being enticed to read the opening chapter on Amanda Meheux’s website I was hooked, bought the book on Kindle and was rewarded with a rollercoaster of emotions for the next few days as I found myself totally unable to put the book down.

Botelet Farm, near Looe in Cornwall

Without a doubt one of the best little gems of a campsite we have as yet found in the West-country is Botelet Fatrm, again from the Cool Camping book, this campsite is on a working farm not far from the tourist attraction of Looe in Cornwall (about 8 miles inland), down, down through narrow country lanes you drive until you come upon a small gap in the dry stone wall, all that greets you is a simple hand painted sign, but on turning into their farm yard you’re instantly taken back a century or two - click here to read the full review

Train life - a link to a story about commuting

Traveling by train is something no one enjoys, other than groups of cackling middle aged women on shopping trips, laden with bags and packed lunches, or small children, although admittedly their excitement has a shelf life of about thirty minutes. Everything about train travel is dull, filthy and frankly depressing, but for some of us it’s an unfortunate necessity of working life. Every winter from October through to May I use trains to commute from Devon to Southampton, up by 5.15 and back home by 8.45, four or five days a week. And yes like millions of other commuters up and down the country it on the whole gets me down, but at times I do find it and my fellow commuters fascinating and often highly amusing - click here to read the article
