The Cava Queen - by Amanda Meheux

The cover of 'the Cava Queen by Amanda Meheux

A good book to me fore-fills one of two needs, either a riveting trip of escapism, or a thought provoking journey that stays with you long after the final page is read; well the Cava Queen provided me with both and more.

The very first chapter flies out of the traps at a terrific rate, less than a page or two in and you’ve already fallen for this impossibly believable heroine. A heroine who finds herself waking up on the wrong side of 40, hung-over, in the dog house with both her mother and best friend for missing a surprise birthday party and trying to creep out of the bed she’d found herself in, said bed that she seems to be sharing with a 20 something transvestite; oh and she’s also somehow ended up in the gay capital of Spain. With little or no reason to return home she decides to stay and see what life will bring her.

What follows is a roller-coaster ride as we’re invited to share her journey from losing her career, a minor role on daytime TV as a ‘life-style’ coach, to someone for whom her own advice becomes a reality as she drops everything to escape dreary England for the bright lights of Spain. Along the way many new characters are introduced, some gently nudged, others positively pushed in to more rewarding lifestyles, as she meanders through her new life, sub plots are seeded throughout, forcing you to dart backwards and forwards in the book to remind you of chance meetings or remarks. The characters are fully fleshed out, absorbing and believable, their change through the book noticeable. Locations and atmospheres become realities in ways no travel guru could compete with. And then there is the humor, part ‘Sex in the City’ at times and more ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ at others, all delivered in a very English way. Amanda Meheux has delivered a ‘corker’ of a first novel here, just be aware that reading it may seriously change your outlook on life; I for one cannot wait to read her next.
